Stenden inspirer Dr Stephen Covey has passed away

Dr Stephen Covey, author of, among others, the influential book, ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, died in the hospital yesterday from complications of an accident he had in April this year.

The management guru was an important inspirer for Stenden, especially in view of the recognisability and applicability of the principles he described for Higher Professional Education and Master’s students operating in global networks. As a result, Covey’s principles of personal leadership and effectiveness became profoundly nestled in the Stenden organisation. The ‘7 Habits’ are applied throughout the Stenden organisation, and many of our members of staff and students still apply those principles with success. The 'Covey Training Courses' that are offered to all our members of staff are examples of this.

In October 2007, Stephen Covey honoured Stenden with a visit to its Leeuwarden location for the ‘Stephen Covey Event’, where he spoke about ‘leadership’ and also handed out the ‘Trim Tab Awards’ to the most effective members of staff. The event was memorialised in the form of a sculpture in the Stenden Library and Knowledge Centre.

Stenden mourns the loss of Stephen Covey and will continue to apply the valuable principles he worked on over the past few decades. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.
