  INTERNSHIP abroad

Intership at Primary school Kumasi in Ghana

In 2004 I had the opportunity to visit the Netherlands for the second time, as secretary of the Ghana National Association of Vocational and Technical Institutions, to study about technical education in the Netherlands. In October 2005, I started my own school in my house. Through the help of Jan and Sini Dekker, the school has got a big site and some classrooms have been built. Wilto Groenendaal, an other teacher of the teacher training institution De Eekhorst, visited with his wife Kumasi in 2004 and he helped with ideas, money and materials. (For instance 10 computers from the school in Leeuwarden) Most of the students who stayed some time at my school are still in touch with us and support us as well.

At the moment we have not yet built a hostel for students but we can rent a room for them.
I am very enthusiastic about the contribution of the Dutch students. They stimulated us to look at a different way to children and how to teach them. It widened up our view about teaching children with a different cultural background. So I hope that some of you will pick up this opportunity to teach some time at the school in Kumasi and discuss with us how to improve the quality of our teaching in Ghana.
