Working while studying

If you want to work during your study, to get a little extra income, please be informed that some regulations apply for your future job:

  • Foreign students in the Netherlands are allowed to take a part-time job;
  • EU students do not need a work permit;
  • Non EU students do need a work permit which needs to be obtained via the employer, this process could take up to 6 weeks;
  • Students need to make a choice to work either:
    - part time for a maximum of 10 hours a week throughout the year,
    - or full time for three months during summer period (June, July and August).

Finding a job can be quite difficult for international students who do not speak Dutch, please take this into account, also according to your financial planning!

Read more in the factsheet of the Nuffic about the rules and regulations. It also gives information on matters such as insurance and income tax.

For students from New Eurpean countries, such as Bulgaria and Romania, seperate regulations are applicable for working in the Netherlands. Our Information Center can inform you about this when you have started your study.
