Educational Concept

The Educational concept of Stenden university is to train future managers with the help of well-educated tutors and innovative Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Case Based Learning (CBL) systems. Using those resources, Stenden will teach to the prospective managers not only the theoretical, but also the practical side of the business.

In 1987, Stenden university became the first educational institute in the Netherlands introducing Problem Based Learning. Central to this educational concept are the individual groups with a maximum amount of 12 students learning independently by way of a problem – solving approach. This educational vision is based on several pillars, derived from the constructivist theory on education and learning:

  1. Learning is an active process
  2. Modular and thematic education
  3. Problem Based Learning
  4. Ethically based education

Building on the PBL tradition, Stenden university strives to continue improving its education, such as: competence- based learning, ethically-oriented education, the introduction of distance learning and a digital learning environment.

Every year consists of 2 semesters. Each semester consists of 2 modules of 10 weeks. Every module deals with a central topic on which all theory classes, PBL cases and tests are focused on.  With this form of thematic education, you will receive a few themes every year.
