Hestia

Origins of the Hestia Student Lounge

Over the last 10 years, Stenden has attracted a large number of students from all over the world. The name "Hestia", which has its own origin, was chosen as the name of the student lounge. The significance of Hestia arises out of old Greek mythology.

Many of the international students who come to study at Stenden university from abroad feel lost and lonely in a new country and unfamiliar culture upon their arrival from home country. Through our services we try to make them feel belong, find their way in a new country and build-up a network of friends and connections.
Do not be misled by our strive for internationals though, one of our primary goals is to accommodate Dutch people in our lounge and thereby make the most out of the intercultural exchange and integration.

Hestia was founded and opened its doors in 28th of November 2002. Since then our lounge has changed lots of hosts, each of which had spiced it up with the flavor of their own culture, bringing new ideas and improving the services we offer to students. For a while now Hestia Student Lounge is known to be a "home away from home" for students of Stenden. We are growing each year with more and more innovative ideas, with the intent on truly becoming a professional establishment.

Mission & Vision

Hestia, the student lounge at Stenden university, is a place for students of all walks of life to come and make use of. With a team of five students from different parts of the world, Hestia is a good place for Dutch and international students to get to know one another and share in each other’s cultures. It’s a place to party and organize parties, a place to hang out and play games and watch T.V. or even a place just to chill out and pass some time. It is also a place that has been used by many students in the past; for private as well as public events.

The Hestia Student Lounge is located near the bicycle shed at Stenden. Besides serving the function of a lounge, the two houses are home to four bachelor or master students. These four students, also known as the hosts of Hestia, are there to welcome students and, together, participate in the operations of the lounge. The lounge is managed by a master student from one of the four programmes of master studies offered by Stenden university.

Following this idea, our mission statement at Hestia Student Lounge:

"We provide a home away from home for Dutch and International Students"

Our vision is to further develop Hestia into a more professional organization and a central hub for student related activities at Stenden. We would also like to associate with other student organizations and organize efforts in bringing all the students at Stenden together.
